Inheriting a passion for fashion, dressmaker extraordinaire, Krissie Colton launched her children’s clothing company with support from business start-up experts, Outset Cornwall.
Talented seamstress and mum of three Krissie Colton is enjoying a career she loves producing bespoke children’s clothing created from hand selected fabrics and featuring exclusive prints.
Krissie grew up surrounded by the chatter of women talking, needles clicking and new creations emerging.
“Fabrics and sewing have been around me forever,” enthused Krissie. “My nanna made her own clothes, mum studied fashion; it was a total way of life.”
‘ME Clothing’ was born out of Krissie’s desire to carry on the family tradition of working with the bright colours, different patterns and textures of her childhood.
Making a wide range of children’s clothing lines and selling them at fairs around Cornwall, Krissie realised her business had no real structure. That’s when she got in touch with Outset Cornwall who provide a tailored programme of support to new and growing businesses.
“Attending Outset’s start-up course was great, as it gave me focus and showed me the way to move forward.”
She has rationalised her product range, and now creates girls’ dresses and boys’ shirts. Krissie has also moved away from weekly small fairs and car boot sales to concentrate on much bigger events. These include a presence at the Handmade Fair at Hampton Court Palace hosted by TV’s Kirsty Allsopp and the opportunity to showcase her collection at the prestigious London Fashion Week in autumn 2018 and New York Fashion Week in 2019.
Krissie’s top tips for success include staying in the right mind set; being creative in your thinking, planning and marketing; and concentrating on what’s working and always moving forward.
